Mr Roden Tong, President of The Law Society of Hong Kong

Mr Roden Tong is a distinguished legal and business leader with extensive experience in litigation, dispute resolution and insurance management. Prior to transitioning to an in‑house role in 2007, he practised as a solicitor specialising in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, and is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong.

Mr Tong currently serves as the Chief Executive of Berkley Insurance Company, Hong Kong Branch, where he oversees the operations of Berkley Insurance Asia in Hong Kong. Under his leadership, the business has developed and maintains a strong focus on Financial Lines and Specialty Insurance. He has substantial experience in handling complex and high‑profile claims across Asia, including Lehman Brothers‑related investment mis‑selling matters, United States securities class actions involving Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland companies, investigations by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and large‑scale fidelity claims. His work has involved advising multinational corporations, listed companies, banks and major financial institutions.

Mr Tong has devoted more than two decades to serving the legal profession through The Law Society of Hong Kong (the “Law Society”). He was elected to the Council in 2016, served as Vice‑President in 2021, and has been serving as President since 2024, having been re-elected in 2025. Over the course of his service, he has contributed extensively to the governance and development of the profession, having served across all Standing Committees of the Law Society, encompassing Compliance, External Affairs, Member Services, Policy and Resources, Practitioners Affairs, and Standards and Development.

He has held a wide range of senior leadership roles within the Law Society, notably as Chairman of the Standing Committee on External Affairs from 2021 to 2024 and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Member Services from 2018 to 2021. In addition, he has chaired and served on a substantial number of committees, boards and working parties spanning the full spectrum of professional regulation, policy development and institutional governance.

These include, inter alia, appointments to and leadership of a wide range of committees and working parties of the Law Society, such as Consents Committee, Investigation Committee, Professional Indemnity Scheme Panel Solicitors Selection Board, Greater China Legal Affairs Committee, Legal Talent Recruitment Scheme (Trainee Solicitors) Committee, Working Party for In‑House Lawyers, and Working Party on Law Society Premises. Through these appointments, Mr Tong has contributed to matters relating to regulatory oversight, professional standards, legal practice development and the overall development of the profession. His service extends to numerous other committees and working groups addressing various aspects of governance, regulation and institutional development.

In the public sphere, Mr Tong holds a number of significant statutory and advisory appointments. He is a member of the Election Committee – Legal Subsector, a member of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission, a member of the Expert Advisory Group on Legal and Dispute Resolution Services, and a non‑official member of the Trade and Industry Advisory Board. Through these roles, he contributes to the advancement of Hong Kong’s constitutional framework, judicial system and economic development.

Beyond his work within the Law Society and his public appointments, Mr Tong is actively engaged in the international legal community. He serves as a Council Member of the International Bar Association and is a member of its Bar Issues Commission. He also serves as a Councillor of the LAWASIA Council. In addition, he participates in professional and community initiatives in Hong Kong, including through the Recreation and Sports Club for Hong Kong Professional Bodies.

Mr Tong is deeply committed to community service, particularly in youth development and the promotion of legal awareness. He serves as Director and Assistant Commandant of the Customs Youth Leaders Corps and is an Executive Committee Member of Customs YES under the Customs and Excise Department. He is also a member of the Central Advisory Board of the Junior Police Call and a member of the Hong Kong Council of Volunteering. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award under the Hong Kong Volunteer Award 2022.

Mr Tong holds a Master of Laws from the City University of Hong Kong, a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws from The University of Hong Kong, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of London, and a Bachelor of Arts from Flinders University of South Australia.

Outside his professional and public commitments, Mr Tong is a keen sports enthusiast and regularly participates in squash, golf and running. He has represented the Law Society in a number of golf tournaments.
