Freedom of Speech, Expression and Personal Privacy - Fake News & Doxing Laws

A joint initiative between  LAWASIA and the American Bar Association (ABA)

As governments in the region consider adopting (or have already adopted) anti-fake news laws ostensibly to prevent the spread of misinformation related to COVID-19, the scope of these laws has steadily increased to encompass  statements critical of governments. Bar associations in particular have been targeted as they attempt to press for the rule of law.

Similarly, laws to prevent doxing – the sharing of someone’s personal, identifying information for malicious purposes— are being considered more posing challenges to law enforcement and lawyers alike.

This panel will consider how these issues have played out in a number of countries and begin to discuss what steps bar associations can take to retain their independent voices and privacy of their members and clients.

Please join us for the second dialogue in LAWASIA and the American Bar Association’s four-part virtual dialogue series examining threats to rule of law in Asia stemming from the pandemic. Following the dialogue we will publish an Action Paper detailing actionable steps for bar associations to effectively respond to these challenges while still protecting the rule of law.
