LAWASIA WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT ON PAKISTAN’S JUDICIARY LAWASIA
The Law Association for Asia and the Pacific, welcomes the announcement of the government ofPakistan that it will reinstate Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and all other judges of Pakistan’s courts who were deposed by the former president of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, in November 2007.
LAWASIA acknowledges, with considerable admiration, the courage and commitment of the legal communityin Pakistan, which, through its active and unwavering dedication to the concept of an independent judiciary in Pakistan, has led an historic movement in support of this cornerstone of the rule of law. The legal professionof Pakistan has, through its united commitment to this cause, set an example for its counterparts throughout the world and has earned the respect of all who cherish democratic values.
Further, LAWASIA encourages all parties, as they work to establish lasting strong and independent judicialconditions in Pakistan, to adhere to universally-accepted principles of the independence of the judiciary as enshrined in the Beijing Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary 1997 and the Bangalore Principles ofJudicial Conduct, 2002.
